US President to meet Theresa May to discuss post-Brexit ties

May contacted Trump days after he was inaugurated, extending the invitation for a coveted state visit that would be hosted by Queen Elizabeth II, but that gesture has proved far more controversial than expected as Trump has shown little interest in maintaining "diplomacy as usual" with European allies.

A giant 20-foot balloon depicting an orange and angry baby Trump in a nappy will rise above Parliament Square Gardens tomorrow after London Mayor Sadiq Khan led Greater London Authority gave permission for it to fly.

"UK and USA special forces will be involved in a demonstration which will involve a counter-terrorism scenario and an outdoor capabilities demonstration showing equipment that the [British] special forces use when they conduct joint operations with their United States counterparts", a statement from Downing Street read. "So I think that's the effect the balloon will have".

He said Britain was "a pretty hot spot right now with a lot of resignations".

He said: "The people voted to break it up so I would imagine that's what they would do, but maybe they're taking a different route - I don't know if that is what they voted for".

'The Scottish Government has been planning for this for some time with key partners, including Police Scotland, and we will continue to work with them as required on the final preparations.

Trump, who has repeatedly praised Brexit, has expressed enthusiasm for a wide-ranging trade deal with Britain after its European Union departure in March next year.

But the president will avoid London nearly entirely during his trip, which has been characterised as an attempt to avoid humiliation over the planned protests surrounding his visit.

Melania Trump's spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The poll conducted this week said 63 percent found Trump racist, and 74 percent said he was sexist.

Mr Trump arrives Thursday afternoon following a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels and largely avoids the capital's centre and the protesters.

Scotland Yard said it has specialist plans in place to ensure the event will be secure and said in a statement: "We are preparing for a multi-faceted policing and security operation, involving the protection and movement of the president".

But Brexit champion Nigel Farage predicted there would be a "real clash" on Brexit. "I think they agree with me on immigration", he said, also reminding reporters that his mother was from Scotland, which he plans to visit after his official meetings in England.

He will then travel to Helsinki for a summit with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

Trump's wife is also concerned about how the British people will be viewing her and her husband during the trip.

His "America First" policies, including the decision to pull the United States out of the Paris climate accord and the nuclear deal with Iran, have brought him into conflict with Britain's leaders over issues of real substance.

Trump's visit to the United Kingdom, the 12th US President to make such a tour, comes amid what he described as "turmoil" for the United Kingdom government, as Prime Minister May faces down rebellion from within her own party over her Brexit strategy.
