Trump nears decision on replacement for Supreme Court

President Trump will announce his latest nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court tonight.

President Donald Trump said Sunday afternoon he still had not made his final decision on a Supreme Court nominee, but anticipated finishing by Monday.

Kavanaugh is a former clerk to Anthony Kennedy, and was the principle author of the Ken Starr report on Bill Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky.

"I've never seen a president of the United States in effect make himself a puppet of outside groups and choose from a group of right wing fringe ideologues that are prepared on this list", said Blumenthal on ABC's "This Week", accusing Trump of "outsourc [ing]" his choice to the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation.

All the major broadcast and cable news networks will air the announcement live.

The White House hopes Kyl's close ties to Senate Republicans will help smooth the path for Trump's eventual selection to win confirmation.

Some conservatives have expressed concerns about Kavanaugh - a longtime judge and a former clerk for Kennedy - questioning his commitment to social issues like abortion and noting his time serving under President George W. Bush as evidence he is a more establishment choice. The court could also be called upon to render judgment on issues of personal significance to Trump and his administration including matters arising from Special Counsel Robert Mueller's ongoing Russia-related investigation and several civil lawsuits pending against Trump. The new justice has the potential to entrench conservative control of the Supreme Court for years to come. He claimed that due to how dysfunctional the two parties were, it is unlikely that many Democrats would support a Trump nominee. That means President Trump should select anyone but Kethledge or Hardiman.

Trump spent the weekend at his New Jersey golf resort mulling over his final decision, but said that he was down to four candidates who still had a chance of being invited to the White House for their national televised coming out party on Monday night.

Hardiman serves on the same court as Maryanne Barry Trump, which is based in Philadelphia.

He says, "Because President Trump has said repeatedly that he would nominate judges to overturn the ACA, the Supreme Court vacancy is only further putting health care front and center, raising the stakes for maintaining these vital health care protections". But the president in recent days seemed to narrow his shortlist for the court down to two other appellate judges, Brett Kavanaugh and Thomas Hardiman. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Kelly Ayotte served as the "sherpa" for Justice Neil Gorsuch in 2017.

A confirmation of Mr. Trump's nominee could give conservatives a reliable, long-term majority on the highest court. Eastern time during a prime-time address in the White House's East Room.

Kethledge, 51, sits on the Sixth Circuit appeals court.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when she was questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings previous year. "I don't think my role is to rubber stamp for the president, but it's also not an automatic knee-jerk no, either".
