Mexico's president-elect shuns guards, asks 'people' for protection

Mexico's newly elected leftist president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has pledged to "reach an understanding" with US President Donald Trump at a time when both countries need consensus on everything from trade to security and migration.

The brash United States leader has also threatened to tear up NAFTA, the two-decade-old North American Free Trade Agreement.

The left-wing Lopez Obrador, the former mayor of Mexico City, won more than half the election's votes on Sunday and will be inaugurated December 1.

During a May debate, AMLO said he wants "a friendly relationship with the government of the United States, but not one of subordination". We have a border of more than 3,000 kilometres, more than 12 million Mexicans live in the United States.

Urzua, who served as Lopez Obrador's finance secretary during the first few years of his 2000-2005 term as mayor of Mexico City, said another priority was to reduce costs at Pemex.

"We are going to achieve a peaceful transformation, without violence", Obrador said. That is what we always want to maintain with the USA government, that there be mutual respect. "I think he's going to try to help us with the border".

Conservative-centrist Ricardo Anaya received up to 22.8 per cent, while Jose Antonio Meade from outgoing President Enrique Pena Nieto's Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI) had up to 16.3 per cent.

That violence was on many minds as television stations carried live images of Lopez Obrador weaving through Mexico City's notoriously chaotic traffic in the front passenger seat of a compact auto that was at least 5 years old. Credit agency Finch also warned that the election would bring prolonged uncertainty over the future of the oil industry.

The two have traded testy moments in the playoffs when Stephenson's in teams faced James' squads in both Miami and Cleveland. This will be the second time in his career that he will be playing for the San Antonio Spurs under head coach Greg Popovich.

"You've got an openly left-wing economic nationalist who is from a new party, a party that didn't even exist at the last (national) election, who is managing to sweep into power, not just in the presidency, but in the Congress as well", Wood said.

Going into Monday it was unclear whether Lopez Obrador had done enough to secure the first outright majority in Congress in over 20 years, with pollsters' early estimates suggesting he was close in the lower house but farther away in the Senate.

The leftist politicians joined a handful of world leaders, artists and politicians around the world congratulating Lopez Obrador and his party over their victory in the presidency and both legislative chambers.

Lopez Obrador won thanks to overwhelming anger at the status quo and his success at presenting himself as an agent of change.

"When a wall is built to segregate people or when the word "foreigner" is used to insult, disparage and discriminate our fellow men, humanity, intelligence and history are being insulted", said the president-elect, who will take office in December, in a speech in Los Angeles past year explaining the need to "counteract" Trump's strategy. "We'll be looking in the coming weeks for indications of the size and nature of any fiscal stimulus or signs of a more interventionist energy policy".

Lopez Obrador vows to improve Mexicans' lives by ending corruption and years of drug violence, while also reducing the wealth gap.

Disappointed with the PRD's support for Mr. Peña Nieto's economic initiatives, Mr. Obrador founded a new party, the National Regeneration Movement in 2014, and won the elections in 2018 with 53.8% of the votes in his favour.

"He is using all this campaign against Mexico as propaganda", he said back in April, according to Vice, adding that there isn't a "great threat" at the U.S. -Mexico border.
