Melania Trump Visits Second Child Detention Site Without Controversy

The decision provoked a storm of criticism and speculation as to whether it was directed at anyone from her husband, to the media to the children to no one at all, and spawned copy-cat jackets from people saying they did care. This time, she chose less controversial apparel. But she was clearly walking a line between highlighting the plight of immigrant families and promoting law enforcement.

Numerous protesters were still upset about Melania's jacket choice during her visit to Texas a week ago.

But the trip was overshadowed by a jacket she wore to and from Texas that said on the back: "I really don't care, do u?".

It was removed before she disembarked in Texas and was not seen again.

U.S. first lady Melania Trump tours a U.S. Customs and Border Protection Facility in Tucson, Arizona, on June 28.

There was no discussion of the thousands of children the Trump administration has forcibly separated from their parents and families.

That means, the self-styled children's advocate didn't wear a jacket with words on the back that could be interpreted as meaning she doesn't really care about the suffering of children who had been detained under her husband's zero-tolerance policy for undocumented immigrants trying to enter the United States. "She told her staff she wanted to go, and we made that happen", Grisham said.

"I want to thank you for all your hard work", she told officials on her first stop at a Customs and Border Patrol facility in Tucson.

Protesters greeted first lady Melania Trump in Phoenix on Thursday with a giant balloon mocking her husband.

President Donald Trump was last week forced into a U-turn on the separations, but about 2,000 children remain split from their parents. The speech came at the height of the controversy over the policy to take immigrant children from parents who cross the US border.

"This is a complex issue". She also visited what officials described as a short-term holding center for migrant minors. The first lady's spokeswoman said there had been no hidden message.

Sessions said that refusing to prosecute adults crossing illegally into the U.S. would be a disservice to the children they bring with them.

"There's a lot of parents in the border patrol that really care for the children", she emphasized.

Later in Phoenix, she toured a shelter for 121 children aged from a few months to 17 years, some with babies of their own.

President Trump also undercut the no-message message with a tweet about his wife.

At the Tucson border patrol processing center, Melania Trump was shown an image of a 6-year-old boy whom agents reportedly rescued recently after finding the boy with a note just north of the border.
