Celebrities Are Losing Millions of Followers as Twitter Slashes Fake Accounts

The Washington Post's Elizabeth Dwoskin reported that President Donald Trump's follower count had already fallen by 100 000, and Barack Obama's was down 400 000.

It follows renewed scrutiny over fake news and users on social media.

Pop music artist Katy Perry, whose account is the most followed, lost more than 2.8 million followers on Thursday, a 2.6 percent fall from the day earlier. The account of Mr. Kejriwal, @ArvindKejriwal, had lost over 90,000 followers from 1.39 crore on Thursday to 1.38 crore on Friday evening. Rihanna, Ellen DeGeneres, Lady Gaga, also all lost about 2 million followers.

Nyakundi's followers have declined from 1.2 million to 696,000, while Dela's numbers stand at 521,000, down from one million. The list reads like a who's who of United States pop culture, with people like Rihanna, Taylor Swift, Kim Kardashian and Oprah collectively losing millions of followers.

Twitter said owners of accounts will not be able to log in unless they validate the accounts and reset passwords. "This week, we'll be removing these locked accounts from follower counts across profiles globally", said Twitter.

"As a result, the number of followers displayed on many profiles may go down".

Former President Obama lost more than 2 million followers on Twitter this week as the social platform removed inactive and locked accounts from follower counts, according to a preliminary review by The Hill.

Other celebrities also lost big. Obama, for example, gained almost 2,000 followers in the overnight hours, which roughly fits the range of followers he gained in previous weeks during the same Thursday-to-Friday overnight interval.

The deputy president's now has 1,968,355 followers. Officials said this will help make Twitter a "more trusted service for public conversation".

Twitter explained that it had identified accounts with suspicious behavior, forming the basis of the elimination method.

The average user was told to expect a drop of about four followers or fewer, while the more followed account holders were warned it could be a lot higher.

While eliminating locked accounts from follower totals will not affect MAU or DAU totals, Twitter's efforts to shut down other kinds of accounts - including those set up by spammers - potentially could, Gadde acknowledged.
