Trump narrows list of potential Supreme Court nominees

Who is Trump listening to?

Republicans hold a narrow 51-49 majority in the chamber and Trump can ill-afford any defections.

Kennedy's retirement announcement on Wednesday provided Trump with an opportunity to place a second justice on the all-important court.

"Throughout his almost 30 years on the Supreme Court", Mr. Trump said, "Justice Kennedy has been praised by all for his dedicated and dignified service". They didn't want interference from the Republican minority while they went about stacking the courts with liberal judges suitable to their agenda.

Some possible nominees being eyed include Hardiman, who serves alongside Trump's sister on the Philadelphia-based 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeals, and Kethledge, a federal appeals court judge who clerked for Kennedy.

The president is expected to announce his nomination to replace Kennedy soon. Bork was rejected by the Senate (58-42) after what was up to that point the most acrimonious Supreme Court confirmation fight. "It's a shame when the place breaks down", said Democratic Sen.

"McConnell will make it a priority", he told reporters. "Any justice that the president appoints should be against Roe v. Wade because anybody who's read the Constitution should be against Roe v. Wade - even if you are a pro-choice person". His first nominee, Neil Gorsuch, was confirmed by the US Senate previous year. That Republican called Kennedy's retirement "a majority saver". In other remarks to reporters, President Trump said he would raise the issue of alleged Russian election meddling when he meets President Putin in Finland on 16 July. But when asked on Friday whether he'll be asking potential candidates about abortion or Roe, Trump said, "That's not a question I'll be asking", adding he thinks that it's "inappropriate to discuss". "Say hello to your boy", President Trump remarked to Kennedy after delivering his first address to Congress in February 2017.

"It is a group of very highly talented, very brilliant, mostly conservative judges", Trump added.

Trump will also discuss the vacancy with McConnell and Sen.

"We're now four months away from an election to determine the party that will control the Senate", she said in the statement. "Leader McConnell set that standard in 2016 when he denied Judge Garland a hearing for almost a year, and the Senate should follow the McConnell Standard".

One of the political adages Democrats and leftists need to internalize in the coming years is: "It's extremely hard to take something away from people once they have it". All three are up for reelection this year.

"Merrick Garland is probably still available, and I am still hung up on how shamefully he was treated", said Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.).

But Republicans dismissed the idea of a delay, saying 2016 was different because a new president would make the pick.
