Trudeau Says Recreational Cannabis Will Be Legal In Canada October 17

"Now that the Prime Minister has announced that recreational marijuana will become legal in Canada on October 17, 2018, it is important to remember that our existing laws are still in place until they are repealed and replaced".

The federal government is basking in the hazy glow of its plan to legalize recreational marijuana, but it is reminding Canadians that pot remains illegal until the Cannabis Act actually goes into effect.

Although the Canadian government had initially stated its intent to implement by July 2018, provinces and territories, who will be responsible for drafting their own rules for marijuana sales, have advised that they would need eight to 12 weeks after the Senate approval to transition to the new framework.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau notes how this move will positively impact organized crime whilst protecting the nation's youth.

His government introduced legislation previous year in a bid to make Canada the second country in the world to legalise cannabis, after Uruguay. Those 18 and older in Canada will be allowed to have as much as 30 grams of dried Cannabis in public, share as much as 30 grams of cannabis with other adults and cultivate as many as four home plants per household.

Independent senator Tony Dean said the passing of the bill "ends 90 years of prohibition of cannabis in this country, 90 years of needless criminalisation, 90 years of a just-say-no approach to drugs that hasn't worked". Trina Fraser, a cannabis business specialist at Brazeau Seller Law, said New Brunswick is almost ready to start stocking its store shelves, for example, while B.C. hasn't even started accepting applications for licenses to operate private stores.

Quebec, Manitoba and Nunavut have already chose to ban home-grown weed, despite the fact that the new federal law stipulates that individuals may grow up to four plants per dwelling.

The upsurge in fighting has wounded dozens of civilians and prevented aid organisations from reaching parts of Hodeidah.

"There's a law that was duly passed in Quebec and that's the law of the province", she said. The government has said that they are first focusing on repealing and replacing laws surrounding marijuana and will later address previous convictions.

Trudeau's Liberals had made legalizing recreational use of marijuana part of their successful 2015 election campaign.

But Mr Trudeau said it was "illogical" to start talking about amnesty and pardons before the law is changed.

Canadian cannabis companies surged in the stock market on Wednesday shortly after the legislation was passed.

In the U.S., nine states and the District of Columbia have legalized cannabis, but marijuana remains federally classified a Schedule 1 drug with "no now accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse", according to the Drug Enforcement Administration. IL does allow legal medical marijuana, and is one of 29 states to do so. On the opposite end of the spectrum, marijuana availability will only be provided in 40 state-run shops in Ontario.

Last week, we published a blog post regarding a proposed bill in the United States Senate that would provide more autonomy to individual States in regulating marijuana.
