The Afghan interior Ministry building heard the explosion and gunfire

Several militants dressed in US military uniforms opened fire outside the Afghan Interior Ministry on Wednesday, before being fatally shot by security forces, the top USA commander in the country said. "We did lose one friendly casualty and had a few wounded, but the enemy attack failed and never was able to penetrate MOI headquarters", Nicholson said. That facility was attacked in February by suicide bombers in ambulances who killed more than 100 people, many of them police officers. The statement called it an "immersion attack" on the ministry in Kabul.

The top US commander in Afghanistan played down a spate of recent Taliban attacks on Wednesday, saying violence levels were still lower than average as some insurgents talked peace - a situation he described as "talking and fighting".

Gunfire and an explosion were heard near the interior ministry building in Kabul today, days after the Taliban vowed to target military and intelligence centres in the Afghan capital.

U.S. Air Force A-10s and an MQ-1C Gray Eagle drone carried out other strikes in the same time period.

The Taliban claimed the attacks in both provinces.

Later Wednesday, the American commander of US and coalition forces in Afghanistan cast doubt the attack was the work of IS, saying instead there are indications the Taliban-allied Haqqani network was behind it.

The attack started with a suicide vehicle bomber, then two other suicide bombers targeted the police station. All three were shot and killed by security forces within minutes of the initial attack, he said, adding that a number of nearby homes were damaged.

Militants armed with guns and rockets attacked the Afghanistan Interior Ministry on Wednesday and casualties are feared, the media reported.

Khalid Safi, a spokesman for the provincial governor, says those killed were the commander of the police station and the deputy director of traffic police for Logar's capital city, Puli Alim.

Afghan security force members stand at the site of an attack in Kabul, capital of Afghanistan, on May 30, 2018. No group immediately claimed responsibility.

The Taliban claimed the attack.

Provincial cities have also been hit as the Taliban has stepped up fighting across the country since they announced the beginning of their annual spring offensive in April. The attackers did not manage to enter the main compound.

"But our police said that at least two civilians were either killed or injured in today's attack", he said.
