Stephen Colbert Pushes Missing Melania Trump Conspiracy: ‘This Is Just Weird’

The gathering, which honored the relatives of slain service members, marked the return to public life of first lady Melania Trump after more than three weeks during which she had not held or attended any official events. However, she was reported to have attended ceremony on Monday event for Gold Star families that was closed to the press.

Even Trump himself got in on the jokes, making mention of the buzz around Melania's disappearance during his speech to the Gold Star families.

The last time Melania Trump participated in an official event was on 10 May, when the first couple greeted three former U.S. prisoners who had been released from captivity in North Korea.

She did attend the G7 summit past year in Italy and also travelled to Germany in July for the G20, although she spent part of that trip trapped in her hotel suite while violent protests raged outside.

Amid the scrutiny, and ahead of the Gold Star reception, Grisham told CNN there was nothing to the rumors, blaming the media for piquing public interest. "They have lost loved ones and deserve respect and privacy", said spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham.

The first lady's whereabouts had been a mystery since May 19, when she returned to the White House five days after undergoing a procedure for a benign kidney condition.

China issues statement on Sino-US trade talks
The two governments released no schedule for the talks, but China said earlier Ross was due to be in Beijing through to Monday. The warning came following a meeting between US Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He in Beijing .

The White House has declined to offer details about her health, aside to say that she was recovering.

The rumor mill has been working overtime in Melania's absence, speculating that she's moved out of the White House completely, or that her rumored body double is out of town.

The White House has issued a statement saying that Melania Trump will not be attending the upcoming G7 summit in Quebec, Canada.

The President laughed off rumours his wife had left him ("Isn't that right, honey?") before asking "Did she leave him?" and pointing to Mrs Trump in her VIP seat.

Before the reception, amid ongoing memes and questions about her boss, Ms Grisham said the "nonsense" was fuelled by the media.

And a journalist for CNBC announced on Twitter last week: "Not that this will deter the conspiracy theorists, but I saw the First Lady walking with her aides in the West Wing yesterday afternoon". As of June 3, a number of journalists have seen her at the White House. Everyone I know can't stop talking about where the first lady is. She also skipped the last two stops on his Asian trip in November, going with him to Japan, South Korea and China but staying behind in Beijing when her husband went on to Vietnam and the Philippines.
