French Open 2018: Rafael Nadal wins 11th title

Rafael Nadal, the tennis superstar leading men's rankings, has clinched a record-extending 11th French Open win after beating eight-ranked Dominic Thiem in straight sets to defend his title.

As Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem warmed up before the French Open final, the booming voice of an announcer at Court Philippe Chatrier called out each player's bona fides.

Nadal struck 26 winners to Thiem's 34 yet made only 24 unforced errors to Thiem's 42, with "unforced errors" a relative term in Nadal Roland Garros matches. However, here past year in the semi-finals, Nadal destroyed Thiem, losing just seven games in a rout, but it is worth mentioning that Thiem triumphed in their last meeting in Madrid last month, in the quarter-finals.

Ruthless Nadal proved far too good for Kevin Anderson as he claimed a 16th Grand Slam title at the US Open.

Others - including U.S. former tennis great Billie Jean King and ex-male professional James Blake - praised Nadal's victory, which was dominant despite an injury scare with hand cramp in the latter stages of the third set. But after, the Spaniard was imperious.

The second set was wrapped up as Thiem sent a backhand into the tramlines but the Austrian refused to capitulate and managed to save four break chances in the opening game of the third. At the following changeover, he was given a salt pill by a doctor and had his left forearm massaged by a trainer.

This is Nadal's 17th grand slam title.

Nadal. the world's No. 1 player, has 17 career Grand Slam titles, now three behind Roger Federer for most all-time.

Their match was suspended at 3-3 in the second set. "I'm very happy about being in the quarter-finals here", Zverev said. Stream every match at Roland Garros live on the FOX+ app and catch up on highlights of any action you've missed.

Katherine Lam is a breaking and trending news digital producer for Fox News. I really wanted to win, " the 24-year-old Austrian said. Thiem broke the Spaniard's serve in the third game of the match, nullifying Nadal's early break but earned only one more break point - which was saved by Nadal.

Rafael Nadal described his performance at the French Open a year ago, when he didn't surrender a set, as "perfect".

Nadal came in looking slightly more vulnerable than he did previous year, in which he lost only 35 games in claiming the title.

The only hiccup was Thiem, his challenge on last legs, fighting off the first four championship points on Nadal's serve in the eighth game.

"Rafa, I just want to say well done", he said at the post-match presentation.

Nadal now stands at 86-2 at French Open and continues to remain unbeaten in finals in Paris.

Grass hasn't tended to favour Nadal in recent years, and the return of a fit-again Roger Federer means he'll likely relinquish favourite status in England.

But most of what transpired Sunday afternoon was eminently familiar: The distinctive roar of appreciation when the Spanish superstar walked into the stadium, the whirring accompaniment of photographers' motor drives as he tossed the ball skyward, the sense that when he closed out the first set, it was ballgame on center court even though it was best-of-five on paper.
