Dramatic finals of Scripps National Spelling Bee to begin

Karthik Nemmani won the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday night, after correctly spelling the word "koinonia". Naysa Modi, a poised and charismatic four-time participant whose long spelling career seemed to be building toward triumph, sat next to a newcomer whom she had already beaten this year - at the county level.

The third through sixth places went to Abhijay Kodali, Jashun Paluru, Navneeth Murali and Sravanth Malla. "It was a dream come true".

Karthik is the 14th consecutive Indian-American champion, and 19 of the past 23 winners have had Indian heritage. Spellers are picked based on the total points earned from a preliminary spelling and vocabulary test combined with their two words. Naysa tied for seventh place last year, tied for 46th place the year before and tied for 50th place in 2015. He takes home more than $42,000 in cash and prizes. And several had appeared at the national bee in previous years.

The stress of competing against the dictionary was etched on many spellers' faces as they took their turn at the microphone and in front of the television cameras. When asked if having her up there helped him, he replied, "Yeah, I guess".

Naysa Modi, 12, from Frisco, Texas, types her word in the air during the evening finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Oxon Hill, Md., Thursday, May 31, 2018.

Russian Federation said Wednesday that its foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, will travel to North Korea for talks on Thursday. It has been thrown into uncertainty, after Mr Trump said he would no longer be attending.

Nemmani's cousin, Srivatsav who was a contestant, but didn't get to the finals, said: "I knew he was going to win".

Padhy, who was speller No. 290 in this year's national contest, on Thursday correctly spelled Guayaquil, which is a port city in Ecuador along the Guayas River.

"She was just as graceful as she could be", bee program manager Corrie Loeffler said.

RSVBee created the record-breaking pool of competitors, which prompted the Bee to add an extra day of on-stage spelling to the tournament. "We weren't against each other".

On Wednesday night, bee officials used test scores to determine that 41 spellers would move on to the finals, to compete under the glaring lights of prime-time television.
