BU Alumna Wins Upset Congressional Primary in New York City

The last time New York Rep. Joe Crowley faced a primary challenge, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was a teenager.

Ocasio-Cortez has also been at the front lines - literally so, last weekend, when she traveled to join protests at an ICE detention center in Texas - of the progressive backlash against the Trump administration's border and immigration policies.

Ocasio-Cortez has been a community organizer in the Bronx and worked on Sanders' presidential campaign. Prior to her congressional run and following her graduation from Boston University with a degree in economics and global relations, Ocasio-Cortez worked in the office of Sen.

A millennial candidate has shaken up the US Democratic Party having beaten the incumbent congressman for his seat.

He was also the chair of the House Democratic Caucus and headed the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian-Americans at one time, taking great interest in US-India ties.

So why did so many news organizations refuse to say her name? Instead, she managed to raise more small donations than any other congressional candidate in NY, which allowed her to campaign sincerely on a platform for economic justice, while exposing Crowley as a centrist who does not represent real change.

Romelu Lukaku gives Belgium killer edge
The previous match of England vs Tunisia resulted in 2-1, only to prove that they can pose to be a threat to Belgium . The Red Devils were rampant at times and rested both forwards in the second half for tougher tests ahead.

"There's no denying when you watch her [campaign] video that she's a deeply inspiring person", she said, "and I feel like people really gravitated toward her leadership and hope".

"I think I was primarily compelled on moral grounds, because I could only imagine if 60 people were shot and killed in Ferguson or if 60 people were shot and killed in the West Virginia teacher strikes", Ocasio-Cortez said.

"She answered the call", he said, adding that people who know her are "collectively beaming with pride". She had a strong grassroots bid, and won the endorsement of some groups on the Democratic Party's far left, like MoveOn. After all, this imperfect democracy still runs on votes, and Wall Street support, which Crowley's campaign had plenty of, no longer holds the sway many in the Democratic National Committee may believe it does.

Ocasio-Cortez's victory sends a resounding message to the Democratic establishment: Progressives are demanding change - and the party can't afford not to listen to them.

"I'm proud to be a Democrat, I was raised in a Democratic family with Democratic values", Ocasio-Cortez said. "I have yet to connect with Joe and I'll continue to reach out to members of the caucus, but again we are still processing and again, anything can happen so I'm not going to speculate", she said. But it's only in a year like this one when those factors are sufficient to bring a 28-year-old first-time candidate such as Ocasio-Cortez to victory. She went on to describe her platform, promising to work for Medicare for all, tuition-free public college, a federal jobs guarantee, and criminal justice reform. "I don't think that we should respond by actively harming and potentially putting people's lives in danger".
