Ash From New Volcanic Eruptions Closes Bali's Airport

Indonesian authorities shut Bali's worldwide airport for a second time in seven months as a fresh eruption Thursday at Mount Agung near the popular tourist island sent volcanic ashes several miles high into the sky.

Bali's main worldwide gateway will be closed until at least Friday evening, according to officials, who added that two other domestic airports were also shut.

The eruption sent an ash column of 2,500 metres (8,200 ft) into the air and a reddish flame was visible in Mount Agung's crater, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for the agency said in the statement.

The volcanic activity began on Thursday, prompting several airlines to delay or cancel their flights to Bali prior to the Friday airport closure. Volcanic ash can damage aircraft engines, clog fuel and cooling systems, and affect visibility.

At least one flight out of Bali to Perth from Air Asia has been cancelled.

Thousands were stranded at the airport or nearby hotels Friday, but it was not immediately clear how many tourists were unable to leave the island.

Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jet Star were monitoring the situation in consultation with Australia's Bureau of Meteorology's Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre, which was due to meet on Friday morning to assess when flights might resume.

"In the first days of the activity natural disaster shocks were felt after which followed the emission of ash, sand and stones". "Please do not manually re-book your flights", says Jetstar.

The report further suggests that the sudden increase in the lava eruption has forced millions of people to evacuate the nearby regions of the volcanoes. "The safety of our crew and passengers are our top priority", Emirates said.

Despite the eruption, Agung's status remained on alert status, the second highest danger warning. However, there still remains a 4-kilometer no-go zone around Mount Agung's peak.
