Alexander Zverev makes first grand slam quarterfinal

Alexander Zverev has put in countless hours of work with Jez Green, the former fitness trainer of Andy Murray, and it has certainly paid off at Roland Garros.

Alexander Zverev reached his maiden Grand Slam quarter-final after a third consecutive five-set victory against Karen Khachanov at the French Open.

He arrived at Roland Garros with a 0-4 mark in the majors, and dropped the first two sets in the first round before coming all the way back to win 10-8 in the fifth.

The straightforward victory for 2016 French Open champion Djokovic was his 200th career tour-level win on clay.

Despite the setback Zverev won an assured tiebreak, which included back-to-back backhand winners in the early stages, only for Khachanov to regain the upper hand in the match with two breaks in the third set.

He will next face Austrian seventh seed Dominic Thiem, who reached a third successive quarter-final in Paris by seeing off Japan's Kei Nishikori 6-2, 6-0, 5-7, 6-4.

"I don't know if I'm going to play on grass", Djokovic told a media conference room minutes after walking off court.

Thiem, 24, leads 4-2 overall against Zverev but lost to him last month in the Madrid Masters final.

"I think it's the matchup most of the fans in Germany and Austria were hoping for when they saw the draw", said Thiem. The German also suffered 42 unforced errors, compared to Thiem's 20.

At 4-1 to the Austrian, Zverev took a medical timeout, when the upper part of his left leg was heavily taped.

Sloane Stephens, Simona Halep advance to play for French Open 2018 title
Stephens can join Serena Williams and Jennifer Capriati as the only American women to win a French Open title since 1987. But she failed to convert any of those, and Halep held there, before breaking at love to end it.

She clinched the victory on her first match point with a forehand victor from the baseline.

Djokovic continued his solid progress too as he powered to a 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 win over Spain's Fernando Verdasco, and the Serb says he knows Cecchiato quite well.

I hope this is not the end here. Their match was suspended at 3-3 in the second set.

"I'm very happy about being in the quarter-finals here", Zverev said.

Women's fourth round: No. 1 Simona Halep beat No. 16 Elise Mertens 6-2, 6-1; No. 14 Daria Kasatkina beat No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 (5), 6-3; No. 3 Garbine Muguruza beat Lesia Tsurenko 2-0, retired; No. 12 Angelique Kerber beat No. 7 Caroline Garcia 6-2, 6-3; No. 28 Maria Sharapova advanced when Serena Williams withdrew from the tournament.

Keys faces Kazakhstan's world No 98 Yulia Putintseva, who produced the upset of the day to eliminate 26th seed Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic.

The second seed's first appearance in the last eight of a grand slam ended in disappointment, as he suffered a one-sided defeat on Court Philippe Chatrier.

"I am very pi**ed off about it", he smiled.

But he put the second, a simple forehand victor, into the net and Zverev survived before going on to register a 6-2 3-6 4-6 7-6 (7/3) 7-5 victory in just under four hours.

US Open champion Sloane Stephens is through to the French Open semifinals for the first time, joining fellow American Madison Keys. Nishikori rallied in the third game, which went to deuce five times before he was broken again and won just two points over the final three games.
