The 2018 Nobel Prize For Literature Has Been Cancelled

This year's Nobel Prize in Literature has been postponed in the wake of a sexual and financial scandal that has engulfed the Swedish Academy, the cultural institution responsible for awarding the prestigious prize.

For the first time in nearly 70 years there will be no Nobel Literature Prize this year, as the Swedish Academy that selects the laureate finds itself in turmoil over links to a man accused of sex crimes amid the #MeToo campaign. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awards the prizes for physics, chemistry and economics, while the Nobel Assembly awards the medicine prize. "Their decision underscores the seriousness of the situation and will help safeguard the long-term reputation of the Nobel Prize", the foundation said in a statement released Friday.

"In principle, the Nobel Prize shall be awarded every year, but decisions on Nobel Prizes have been postponed on a number of occasions during the history of the prizes".

Trouble started in the academy last November when French photographer Jean-Claude Arnault, who ran a cultural project with funding from the Swedish Academy, was accused by 18 women of sexual assault.

Arnault has been accused of multiple acts of sexual assault and harassment, including one incident in which he allegedly touched Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria inappropriately. Arnault has denied all of the allegations made against him.

Followed it, there was a wave of resignations including Frostenson and Academy head Sara Danius. Some members also quit over Frostenson staying on board, per the Times.

Responding to the announcement Friday, close observers of the Swedish Academy's handling of the scandal said that the committee essentially had no other choice than to postpone this year's prize. She was later ousted from her position - although she remained a member of the academy - prompting complaints that she was being sacrificed for her desire to bring openness and accountability to the organization.

The Swedish Academy's annual meeting at the Stock Exchange Building in Stockholm, December 20, 2017. Arnault was also accused of leaking the name of the victor in advance at least three times.

The Nobel Prize in Literature will not be awarded this year. "The crisis in the Swedish Academy has adversely affected the Nobel Prize".

A debate over how to face up to its flaws also divided its 18 members, who are appointed for life, into hostile camps. In the wake of the scandal, those involved are scrambling to change the rules, a process made more hard by the fact that, with only 10 active members, the Academy is one short of the 12-member quorum required to elect new members to vacant seats.

King Carl XVI Gustaf usually hands out all the Nobel Prizes except for the Peace Prize in December. Recent winners include Never Let Me Go author Kazuo Ishiguro and musician Bob Dylan. And, he adds, the Nobel Prize is based on a lifetime of work, not one book in one year. For example, American playwright Eugene O'Neill was given the 1936 award in 1937.
