SHOCKING: Zidane quits Real Madrid

Zinedine Zidane speaks during the press conference.

"After winning a European Cup it is an unexpected decision", club president Florentino Perez commented.

Speculation about Zidane's long-term future persists and it appears that uncertainty might be addressed as, on Thursday morning, the club posted a website statement which said the boss would speak to the media at 1pm local time (12pm BST). I love this club, I love the president, he's given me the chance to come as a player and a manager. I am grateful to the fans.

Zidane took over in 2016, after Rafael Benitez's sacking, and he has won the Champions League in each of his season's at the Bernabeu.

"As a coach, there were a lot things, like winning the Champions League, but if there was one specific moment, it was to win La Liga (in 2017)". I think at times the players need it, when you have a hard time you have to front up occasionally. I am a victor, I like winning and hate losing.

"It is the moment to make a change, also for the players".

'Spiderman' saves boy from balcony in Paris
For many, the question was how the 4-year-old boy had been able to climb over the balcony's railing in the first place. The French media reported that the father of the toddler was detained for alleged parental neglect.

"He wished me luck". That's why I took this decision. After three years, this is what I've made a decision to do. There was no backward step. "What I think this team needs is to continue winning but I think it needs a change, a different voice, another methodology. It's my decision, it could be wrong". As one of the most promising young managers in the world, it's only natural that Madrid would be interested, but can the prise him from White Hart Lane? For me first, but for the squad too. "I will be here close to this club all my life".

"There are hard moments when you can wonder whether you are the right person still".

"If I was the manager here next season, it would have been tough for us to win trophies". Didn't Jose Mourinho return to Stamford Bridge despite leaving on fractious terms the first time around?

Zidane however confirmed that he voluntarily left the position, and was not forced out of the club. I say that I'm not staying, but it's not a sad day for me. Thank you and see you soon. "This relationship isn't going to change, not for anything".

Zinedine Zidane's decision to quit Real Madrid came as a surprise to even his friends, former global teammate Christian Karembeu told ESPN FC and revealed he spoke to the departing head coach in the days before the announcement and had no idea of the decision.
