Samuel Moncada: Venezuela does not accept United States authority

US Vice President Mike Pence urged Maduro on Monday to suspend a divisive May 20 election he denounced as a "sham", as Washington slapped fresh sanctions on Maduro's regime.

The US Treasury Department announced new sanctions Monday on three Venezuelans as the US ratchets up pressure on the government of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who has overseen a crackdown on protesters amid an economic crisis fuelled by rapid inflation.

Haley said that the people of the South American country are "unwilling victims of a criminal narco-state, " and that the May 20 elections in which Maduro is seeking reelection will be fraudulent if independent observers are absent. The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control identified 16 companies in Venezuela and four in Panama.

"We have frozen their assets, blocked their access to our nation, so they can no longer poison our people with their deadly drugs", Pence said.

"Samuel Moncada accuses Mike Pence of an worldwide crime by violating the charters of the OAS and the United Nations in light of his statements at the protocolary meeting of the OAS Permanent Council", the statement released on Monday said.

The Venezuelan government has refused to allow global aid, alleging that would amount to foreign intervention.

Revellers soak up the sun over the bank holiday weekend
The hot day in England comes as people round off their three-day weekend - making it the hottest Bank Holiday Monday in 40 years. There will be plenty of sunshine with light winds with highs of 28C, possibly 29C in London.

Maduro, himself subject to sanctions past year, regularly laughs off Washington's disapproval and blames the U.S.

Martin exploited his position as a former Chief of Financial Intelligence for Venezuela's National Directorate of Intelligence and Prevention Services and accepted bribes from drug traffickers in Venezuela and Colombia to traffic narcotics through Venezuelan airspace, OFAC said.

Haley's comments Tuesday followed Pence's own call the previous day for Venezuela's elections to be suspended.

Martin is also accused of laundering the narcotics' proceeds through planes full of US dollars, couriers and contracts with third parties.

In his speech in front of the Organization of American States in Washington, Pence also urged other nations to take a tougher stance against a country controlled by a totalitarian regime linked to Raúl Castro's Cuba. The move could deal a further blow to the company's declining oil output and exports.
