Residents Forced To Evacuate After Hawaiian Volcano Erupts

Leilani Estates and Lanipuna Gardens were under mandatory evacuation after a giant crack started spreading lava in those communities.

"It sounded like there were rocks in a dryer that were being tumbled around", said Jeremiah Osuna, who lives near Leilani Estates, one of two subdivisions evacuated. Others also told the news network they smelled burning brush and heard tree branches snapping.

The eruption comes after days of earthquakes rattled the area's Puna district.

The eruption started late afternoon Thursday local time - just hours after a magnitude 5.0 natural disaster rattled the area.

According to the Civil Defense Agency, extreme levels of risky sulphur dioxide gas have been detected in the area.

At least 100 people were staying in shelters on Thursday night.

The Kilauea Volcano has been erupting almost continuously for more than three decades.

"It is quite usual for Kilauea to erupt, not at the summit, but through cracks on the volcano", Eleonora Rivalta of the German Research Centre for Geosciences told AFP news agency.

Mr Modi said that the Kalaburagi people can bear the scorching heat, they could no longer stand congress government. While addressing the rally, PM Modi said, "Congress doesn't respect the sacrifices of our soldiers".

Asta Miklius, a geophysicist with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, told The Associated Press in a phone interview that there is no way to know exactly how long the eruption will continue.

"Elderly, young, and people with respiratory issues need to comply with the mandatory evacuation order and leave the area", the agency said in a statement on Friday. David Ige, the governor of Hawaii, says he has activated military reservists from the National Guard to help evacuate thousands of people.

"We've been feeling hard jolts and tremors still yet", he said.

Earlier Thursday, officials at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) had raised the volcano's alert level to warning status. Nearly 4,000 acres of land were covered in lava as a result.

Most of the quakes have been in the magnitude 2.0 range and until Thursday morning, the largest recorded was 4.2. A nearby school was closed due to the ongoing seismic activity and several roadways cracked under the strain of the constant temblors. The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Puʻu ʻŌʻō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.

A 1983 eruption resulted in lava fountains soaring over 1,500 feet into the sky.
