Pompeo promises N. Korea future 'brimming with prosperity' if it denuclearizes

Mr Pompeo, who returned from Pyongyang this week with three Americans who had been held prisoner by North Korea, said the release of men had helped set conditions for a successful meeting between Mr Trump and Mr Kim in Singapore on June 12.

"Normalizing diplomatic relations with Japan is an extremely important step for North Korea to tread a right path in the global community", Abe said on a TV program, stressing he hopes Kim will not be satisfied only with holding talks with the USA and South Korean presidents.

US President Trump announced on May 8 that the US was withdrawing from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JPOA) - the deal that restricted Tehran's nuclear developments in exchange for lifting UN Security Council sanctions and unilateral restrictive measures that had been imposed by the United States and the European Union.

"It's a big undertaking for sure, but one that Chairman Kim and I had the opportunity to have a good, sound discussion on, so that I think we had a pretty good understanding between our two countries what the shared objectives are", Pompeo said.

"We wish these Americans and their families the best, as they reconnect after a very hard time apart", Pompeo said.

One thing that is not up for negotiations, she said, was the US military presence in South Korea - something that North Korea has long desired to end, as it seeks to reunify the Korean peninsula under its control.

Asked if he might visit Pyongyang himself in the future, Trump said it "could happen".

A US decision to withdraw would not come as a huge surprise to its European allies. Despite his criticism, he has reluctantly certified Iran's compliance in the past.

"We would like to express out deep appreciation to the United States government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the people of the United States for bringing us home". "God Bless America, the greatest nation in the world".

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe hinted on Friday at the possibility of meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un if it leads to resolving the issue of past abductions of Japanese citizens by the North.

He said he had had good conversations with Kim, who he found to be a focused and rational interlocutor.
