Paul Manafort just got very bad news from a federal court

Paul Manafort's latest request to have one of special counsel Robert Mueller's indictments against him thrown out was shot down Tuesday when a federal judge in Washington rejected the former Trump campaign chairman's claim that the special counsel's investigative mandate is too broad.

"Given what was being said publicly, the Special Counsel would have been remiss to ignore such an obvious potential link between the Trump campaign and the Russian government", Jackson wrote.

After Jackson's ruling against Manafort, his spokesman Jason Maloni said Manafort "maintains his innocence and looks forward to prevailing in this matter".

The special counsel's office declined to comment on Jackson's memorandum opinion.

Second, even if Mueller had exceeded his authority, the regulations governing appointments of special counsel provide that they "are not meant to, do not, and may not be relied upon to create any rights, substantive or procedural, enforceable at law or equity, by any person or entity, in any matter, civil, criminal, or administrative".

Former Trump campaign chair Paul Manafort, faces an array of criminal charges in two different federal courts, including money laundering charges and allegations that he worked as an unregistered agent for the Ukrainian government.

"Manafort complains that the appointment order 'purports to give the special counsel jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute anything else he might discover during the course of the original investigation", Jackson wrote, "but that is not what the order says". The charges against Manafort relate to his decade of work as a political consultant to Ukrainian politicians. Ellis expressed his skepticism at a previous hearing that Mueller's current investigation into Russian coordination during the 2016 campaign would connect to Manafort's lobbying activities years before the Trump campaign existed.

Lars von Trier's Cannes comeback prompts mass audience walkout
Even with tickets including a "scènes violentes" ("explicit violence") warning, "hundreds" allegedly walked out of the theater. One of the reporters tweeted : "Just left Lars Von Trier's The House that Jack Built ".

Judge Jackson was not moved by any of Mr Manafort's assertions.

Manafort, Jackson said, was not merely associated with President Donald Trump's campaign but served as its chairman for a time. And Donald Trump cited them in a speech to the National Rifle Association to claim that Mueller's indictment is a "phony Russian Federation witch hunt".

Her ruling also pointed to an August 2017 memo by Mr Rosenstein that further detailed the scope of the probe.

"It's unlikely you're going to persuade me the special counsel has unlimited powers to do anything her or she wants", he added.

Manafort's defense team argued Mueller didn't have the authority to file certain charges.

Giuliani himself mentioned Judge T.S. Ellis' remarks in a BuzzFeed News interview. Manafort has asked a different federal judge there to dismiss his case on similar grounds.
