McIlroy hopes to put Masters letdown behind him at Quail Hollow

The dismal effort left McIlroy just a shot inside the three-over cut line and trailing well behind little-known American Paul Malnati, who added a 68 to his first round 67 to lead at seven under.

Phil Mickelson followed the lead of Uihlein two groups ahead of him to shoot a bogey-free 64 by going 5 under on the back nine to sit five shots back of Day in the lead. "It's exciting and I'm definitely happy with how I handled myself, especially through the first eight holes, more so than I was of the back nine".

He finally enjoyed some positive impetus on the ninth hole, crushing his drive 376 yards down the ninth fairway, firing his approach to four feet and holing the birdie putt, to partially atone for his earlier misadventures.

"If I can hit a lot more greens and get the proximity closer, I feel like I could, not run away from it, but do pretty well if I can make the putts".

The greens at Quail Hollow have perplexed Woods all week.

Peter Malnati's 36-hole lead didn't last long.

A further birdie on the 12th had seen McIlroy get to four-under heading to the last and despiting finishing with a disappointing bogey, he remains well in the hunt.

If you'd like to get in on the action, single-day tickets are $65 for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or you can purchase a ticket that's good for any single day for $75. "I've got everything in place for both sides of it, so I'm not going to be bothered if I make it".

Peter Uihlein hit the new course record of 62 to move up to 7-under in a tie for fourth, but was left fuming after being told to take a drugs test straight after the round.

"I was so close to shooting about 7 under on that back nine, " Woods said after shooting 34 on the closing nine holes. Of course, ending with a three-putt bogey didn't help.

The Northern Irishman mixed five bogeys with a double bogey and two birdies on a rollercoaster day.

"I feel like I'm hitting the ball well enough and just trending in the right direction for next week", said Woods, who has won 79 career PGA Tour events and 105 professional tournaments overall.

"I've played it well and it's one of those golf courses that sets up well for me, it fits my eye". However, all three of his birdies came on the back nine at Quail Hollow as he shot an even par.

"I'd much rather be in this position than chasing", Day said.

In his seventh start of the year, Woods, 42, is well into a full-throttled comeback after last April's successful back surgery.

"I just felt very unfocused the first two days, " said Mickelson, who opened with rounds of 72-72.
