LG brings Google Assistant to its 2018 ThinQ TVs powered by webOS

Hopefully, this isn't the case with "Duplex", an artificial-intelligence feature of Google Assistant that made an eerily human-like phone call, complete with "mmhmms" and pauses, to book a haircut appointment. To drive the point home, Google announced six new Assistant voices were coming to devices.

The best part of the story is that John Legend fans will also be able to set their idol's voice in Google Assistant, but this will only happen later this year. The demo - which showed a voice assistant call a hair saloon and book an appointment on behalf of a customer - was nothing short of wonderful, and it just goes to show how far ahead Google is in terms of voice-based AI assistants and conversational, natural language processing.

We discussed Android P, Google Assistant, Google Photos, and also the most important things that Google did not mention during its I/O 2018 keynote, on Orbital, our weekly technology podcast, which you can subscribe to via Apple Podcasts or RSS, download the episode, or just hit the play button below. When used with such smart home devices, the virtual assistant can be instructed to use different voices when replying to certain users. That openness means there's a good chance whatever smart device you want to control in your home has some level of Alexa support.

A couple of useful features have also come with Google Maps. Owners of Google's own Pixel phones will get the updates most quickly. It has been challenging Google more frequently by launching that services duplicate what Google already offers on Android. It is also bringing a new food pick-up and delivery experience to the Assistant that isn't constrained by a chat-style interface, so you can order your favorites from Starbucks, Doordash and Applebee's, in addition to existing partners like Dunkin' Donuts and Domino's.

There are several new changes to Google Photos. Apart from this, Google Map has also integrated Augmented Reality navigation on the screen.

Mom and 2 children die after car hits alligator on I-95
Stanley's husband, Josh Stanley, informed CBS47 he was in Pennsylvania for work when his spouse and youngsters died. I mean, I know it happened". "I'll be walking around, and I'll just see something out of the corner of my eye".

You can get your daily schedule by asking an Echo or Google Home, for example, about your appointments. For example, when booking an appointment at a salon, you will have to give the Assistant some key parameters to work with, like the name of the salon and the timings you wish to book. But sometimes you need to pick up the phone and call a business to get something done. Google Assistant will in future (we don't know how soon) be able to make actual calls for a user.

On the concerning side, Google Duplex essentially hid the fact that it wasn't a real human during the demonstration calls. The Google Assistant would incorporate the use of the technology called "Google Duplex" which would be rolling out as an experiment soon. It was further mentioned that Google wants to be clear with the intent of the call, so businesses should understand the objective. Once your reservation or appointment is booked, the Assistant will add a calendar reminder for your appointment and allow you to cancel if needed. And many people simply don't reserve with businesses that don't take online bookings. He noted that Google Cloud is a $1 billion-a-quarter business. Duplex emerged at a sensitive time for technology companies, and the feature hasn't helped alleviate questions about their growing power over data, automation software and the consequences for privacy and work.

Google has been going all out in ensuring that Google Assistant becomes your go-to assistant of choice.

But the problem with the demo was clear: The Assistant tried to mimic human speech and thus represented an attempt to fool the person on the other end of the phone.

It was indicative of the tone of Google's presentation, probably the most impressive tech keynote that has come along in some time.
