Lars von Trier's Cannes comeback prompts mass audience walkout

The Danish director's new film The House that Jack Built premiered on Monday night. This trailer gives us a look at a lot of footage from this, and I'm so there for it. Even with tickets including a "scènes violentes" ("explicit violence") warning, "hundreds" allegedly walked out of the theater. Reports of 100 walkouts during its initial premiere in Cannes no exaggeration, and then there were the countless people leaving the auditorium the following day during its main press screening, one woman even sticking her middle finger up at the screen in the Palais as she exited - and that was before some of the film's most shocking moments. You can check out a few Twitter reactions below. Nevertheless, the movie still received a prolonged standing ovation for von Trier, who is a regarded as a cinematic visionary in France.

"He mutilates Riley Keough, he mutilates children. and we are all there in formal dress expected to watch it?" the viewer told Vulture's Kyle Buchanan.

Teenager arrested after classmate shot with rifle at high school
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is looking into the history of the rifle and who owned the gun. While police searched for the suspect and secured the area, the school was on lockdown.

The trailer, which alludes to the life of the killer and how he sees the world, is full of blood and gore - which only rattled the anxiety around the film's upcoming release. Vile movie. Should not have been made. The final fifteen minutes of The House That Jack Built sees the film shift gears into a different realm - for the good - but because of the rampant, harsh, very hard to watch, very long build-up, Von Trier can't be forgiven. Gross. Pretentious. Vomitive. Torturous.

One of the reporters tweeted: "Just left Lars Von Trier's The House that Jack Built". After the director stated that the film would be his "most violent yet", it seemed he made good on his promise as the first trailer of the film did little to calm the nerves of audience members. We follow the highly intelligent Jack through 5 incidents and are introduced to the murders that define Jack's development as a serial killer. "You kill art by imposing your moral rules on it!" he rants at his interlocutor Verge (Bruno Ganz), who at this point we still only know by the croak of his voice in the dark. However, as this is Ol' Papa Genitalia Hater Von Trier we're talking about, The House That Jack Built could be just as disgusting as they suggest - if they walked out early on, guess how much worse it gets?
