Italy's populists seek deal that will lead to clash with EU

They had suggested a candidate for prime minister would be named as early as Monday evening.

The media outlet noted that Mattarella's meeting with M5S was scheduled for 04:30 p.m. (14:00 GMT), while the president would hold a meeting with the League at 06:00 p.m.

"We are writing what will be the government programme for the next five years and it's very important for us to finalise it as best as possible, so we have asked the president for a few more days to definitively close the discussion", Di Maio said after meeting Mattarella, adding that a finalised deal would be put to an online vote for Five Star members.

Italy has faced a two-month political impasse since the inconclusive March election, with no party or coalition able to secure enough support to govern.

Matteo Salvini, the leader of the League, and M5S counterpart Luigi Di Maio, worked over the weekend in Milan on a policy document called the contract for the government of change, in which they are expected to take a tougher approach towards illegal immigration and the EU.

Rome. Two large Italian antiestablishment parties sought more time to complete a pact to form a governing coalition and settle on the name of a prime minister, stalling the formation of a new government, writes The Wall Street Journal. The 5 Star Movement and the League are locked in talks to band together to form a new government more than two months after parliamentary elections. In a not-so-veiled threat to the Five Star Movement, Mr. Salvini said on Monday that he remained in contact and on good terms with his coalition partners, some of whom seemed eager to return to vote in the hopes of winning an outright majority.

They have also both said they want to override European Union budget deficit restrictions to help boost growth and are opposed to economic sanctions on Russian Federation, which they have pledged to try to overturn.

Salvini's League won 17 percent of votes in March, but it was part of a right-wing alliance including Berlusconi's Forza Italia that garnered 37 percent of the vote.

Both parties have said they were looking for a person who is neither of the party leaders to head the new Italian government.

The M5S is by far Italy's largest single party after winning almost 33 per cent of the vote.
