Homeland Security Director Kirstjen Nielsen Nearly Resigns After Trump Blow Up

One person at the meeting said Trump railed at the whole Cabinet over what he said was its lack of progress in keeping out illegal immigrants, the Times said.

In recent weeks, Nielsen has announced measures aimed at deterring illegal migration, including criminal prosecutions for parents who cross the border illegally with their children.

In Sept. 2017, the president openly expressed disdain over Sessions' decision to recuse himself from all investigations relating to Russian Federation and even said he would have chosen another person for the job had he known Sessions would make that decision. She told the president her team was doing everything it could, but the president was left unconvinced.

The department pushed back against that characterization.

Nielsen, a protegee of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, has drafted a resignation letter but has not submitted it, two of the officials said, according to the Times.

Instead, she told the newspaper that she will "continue to direct the department to do all we can to implement the president's security-focused agenda" as head of almost 20,000 department employees. Another report from Politico noted that Trump is growing increasingly frustrated with Nielsen, and the knives may be coming out for her. "I share his frustration", she said in a statement. "We are a nation of legislation and the president and his government may apply them" White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said in an announcement on Thursday.

According to the New York Times' Maggie Haberman, Trump's dispute with Nielsen isn't just about policy - rather, it's part of a broader paranoid delusion about where his own DHS chief's loyalties truly lie.

A separate list, the File for the Prevention of Terrorist Radicalization (FSPRT), focuses on people judged to be terror threats. The law led to a heated discussion in the parliament, while the United Nations experts criticized it for "vague wording".

During the meeting, Trump yelled about the United States' porous border and said more needed to be done to fix it. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to disclose private conversations.

Trump's tirade went on so long that many present began fidgeting in their seats and flashing grimaces, White House aides said.

During a rally in Elkhart, Indiana, Thursday evening, Trump complained, "We have the worst immigration laws in the history of mankind". "Give me some reinforcements, please", he urged the crowd, referring to Republicans in Congress who have balked at the billions of dollars he has requested for border security.

While border apprehensions dipped previous year to their lowest levels ever, the numbers have been ticking up in recent months, returning to more typical historical levels.

"The President is rightly frustrated that existing loopholes and the lack of congressional action have prevented this administration from fully securing the border and protecting the American people".

Jeff Sessions and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had to explain to Trump that he didn't have the power to completely shut down the border.
