FDA declares EpiPen shortage across much of country

Officials with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says that they are expecting a shortage of epipens. The FDA announced that Maylan, which makes EpiPens, is experience a shortage of the device. She said the agency "is committed to working closely with the manufacturers to resolve the shortage as quickly as possible". The EpiPen delivers a shot of epinephrine to those having an allergic reaction, and can be life-saving for people with severe allergies.

While some pharmacies still have the devices, a recent FARE survey found that more than 400 people in 45 states reported difficulties filling prescriptions for these branded and generic auto-injectors.

In response to the letter, Mylan said that the FDA warning did not "affect Pfizer's ability to manufacture and supply" products from the facility.

EpiPen production came under U.S. scrutiny in September, when Meridian was warned by the FDA for failing to investigate complaints about defective EpiPens.

They are made by Meridian Medical Technologies Inc., a Pfizer company, on behalf on Mylan N.V.

While families can still get hold of the lower-dose version, EpiPen Jr, as well as generic versions, the news sparked panic for the XX Americans who rely on them day to day.

"You know as a parent when you pull that EpiPen out and you administer it to your child, you can rest of sure, they are getting what they are supposed to get", said Dr. Allen.

Mylan's EpiPen, the generic version of the same allergic reaction medicine, and a different brand called Adrenaclick were all having supply and distribution issues, according to the FDA. "However Mylan continues to release the product".

"Supply levels may vary across wholesales and pharmacies", the company said.

Mylan said its net income rose 31 percent to $87.1 million, or 17 cents per share, in the first quarter.
