Yvonne Staples, Baritone And Manager For Staple Singers, Dies At 80

She was 80 and had been battling colon cancer.

Yvonne joined the group in 1971 when Pervis left to join the military. The group, whose music blended gospel, soul and pop, had a string of hit songs in the 1970s. She went on to contribute to some of their most successful tracks like "I'll Take You There" (which reached No. 1 on the Billboard charts in 1972) and "Respect Yourself" (which peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard charts in 1971), and "Let's Do It Again", which topped the charts in 1975.

"She didn't want to talk about her own singing, " Carpenter said.

Yvonne Staples was Mavis Staples's road manager until recent years, Carpenter said. The group began in the 1940's and signed their first record label contract in 1952.
