United Nations chief warns that Mideast 'chaos' threatens global peace

Russian U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said Washington's decision to put forward its resolution could be a prelude to a Western strike on Syria.

"I've been reiterating my deep concerns about the risks of the current impasse and stressed the need to avoid the situation spiraling out of control".

Russia, which has stonewalled diplomatic efforts at the UN Security Council, has vehemently denied a chemical attack took place.

The UN's Secretary General has said the Cold War is "back with a vengeance".

Asked whether there will be war between the United States and Russian Federation in case of a USA military strike against Syria, Nebenzia said: "We can not exclude any possibility, unfortunately, because we saw messages that are coming from Washington - they were very bellicose".

"I wish there was dialogue through appropriate channels to avert any risky development".

"I'm in awe, Vassily, of how you say that with a straight face", U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

It is incumbent on the UN Security Council to hold perpetrators of these crimes to account and make clear to the world that the use of chemical weapons will not be tolerated.

Senators: Trump is reconsidering his stance on TPP trade deal
It is bad enough to force USA workers to compete with low-wage labor; they should not be forced to compete with no-wage labor. "Very thankful for President Xi of China's kind words on tariffs and automobile barriers", Trump said on Twitter on Tuesday.

Russian Federation has called for an opening meeting of the Security Council with the participation of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said Nebenzia.

"But should the United States and our allies decide to act in Syria, it will be in defense of a principle on which we all agree".

French ambassador Francois Delattre added that his government has evidence that the Assad government is responsible for the April 7 chemical attack. The United States and other countries then blocked a rival Russian bid to set up a different probe that would require the Security Council to attribute responsibility.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday said the Middle East is "in chaos", warning it has become a threat to worldwide peace and security and Syria "represents the most serious threat". He strongly backed the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons' fact-finding mission to investigate last weekend's suspected poison gas attack in the Damascus suburb of Douma, saying the first OPCW team is already in Syria and "a second is expected today or tomorrow".

Experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) are on their way to Syria to probe the alleged chlorine strike on the then rebel-held suburb of Douma, which took place almost a week ago.

Therefore it has agreed to take action against the Syrian Government of President Bashar al-Assad.

Noting that inspectors from the Organisation for the Prevention of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) were due to visit the site shortly, it underlined the Damascus government's commitment that they will have full access and freedom of movement. Troianovski reported from Moscow.
