Third death in IL linked to synthetic marijuana confirmed

A third person has died after experiencing severe bleeding from synthetic marijuana use in IL, health officials said.

Synthetic marijuana, also known as fake weed, is sold for recreational use under the names K2, Spice, Black Mamba, Bombay Blue, Genie and Zohai, among others. The department says two deaths were men in their 20s and a third death was a man in his 40s.

Drug users reported coughing up blood, blood in their urine, severe bloody noses, bleeding gums and internal bleeding, according to the IDPH.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (DHSS) is asking healthcare providers to maintain a high index of suspicion for vitamin K-dependent antagonist coagulopathy in patients presenting with clinical signs of coagulopathy, bleeding unrelated to an injury, or bleeding without another explanation and with a possible history of use of synthetic cannabinoids.

"They are not regulated and people don't know what chemicals may be in them, like rat poison", she said.

Three men who are convenience store clerks in North Lawndale have been arrested and face federal drug charges for allegedly illegally selling synthetic cannabis.

Giving business advice and communicating with people other than the client, for example, aren't covered by the privilege, he said. The White House cited a need to remain in the United States to monitor the USA response to a suspected chemical attack in Syria.

Synthetic cannabinoids are human-made, mind-altering chemicals that have similar properties to those found in the marijuana plant.

Both have been cited in a recent wave of synthetic marijuana deaths in IL. While the substances are meant to mimic the effects of marijuana, they are often far more risky for users.

In the 1980s, synthetic cannabinoids were considered research compounds but they are now produced overseas, according to the CDC.

New York State Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker said, "This disturbing outbreak proves yet again the dangers of using synthetic marijuana". "Synthetic cannabinoids are unsafe".

The CDC and the IDPH previously issued warnings about the adverse effects of synthetic cannabinoids, following 6 reports of severe bleeding between March 10 and 27.

Anyone who has a reaction was told to call 911 or go to the emergency room, officials said.
