The Cars Drive Into Rock & Roll Immortality

The Cars Drive Into Rock & Roll Immortality

It was a night of nostalgia, with an emphasis on 'better late than never, ' as rockers from Bon Jovi, the Cars, Dire Straits and the Moody Blues braved the wet cold of Cleveland on Saturday in the 33rd class inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Simone received a passionate and show-stopping tribute from groundbreaking performers who she has deeply inspired, from Lauryn Hill to Mary J. Blige.

Radio host Howard Stern inducted the band into the annals of rock history while each member of the band shared lengthy speeches about their 35 year long history, reports Rolling Stone. Day sang Simone's "I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free" and Screamin' Jay Hawkins' "I Put a Spell on You", which Simone famously covered.

The Democratic governor hailed the band as "one of the most famous, enduring rock bands of all time". "Not just this year, but the two previous years that we didn't get in", he joked.

Saturday 14 April marked the day the band came together to accept their accolade, five years after lead guitarist Richie Sambora left the group.

Richie Sambora, the original guitarist for arena-packing rockers Bon Jovi reunited with the band for a rousing set at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland that included hits "You Give Love a Bad Name and "It's My Life".

Overall, the Dire Straits Rock Hall Induction experience will be remembered for not having a proper presenter, as well as a performance.

Weather Forecast: Dry today, then showers return this weekend
Forecasters said Saturday in the the metro area should be windy with rain and snow likely and a high in the mid- to upper 30s. I wish I could tell you the forecast for Monday has changed; it has looked bad all week and it continues to look bad.

Simone, who died in 2003, was a leader in pushing for civil rights and influenced everyone from Aretha Franklin to Alicia Keys. The ceremoney started with The Killers giving tribute to the late Tom Petty. Her brother, Sam Waymon, accepted the induction on his sister's behalf. "As as fellow member I found I might be the most qualified one to do this".

Alabama Shakes singer Brittany Howard will pay homage to late gospel artist Tharpe, an early influence on the music that became rock 'n roll.

Now that the Induction Ceremony will be taking place every other year in the Rock Hall City, fans can look forward to the 35th affair when acts such as Weezer, Oasis, Daft Punk and Usher are eligible. Illsley inducted the band himself.

Jon Bon Jovi began: "I've been writing this speech since I first strummed the broom and sang at the top of the stairs of my childhood home".

Flowers of the Killers, who has covered The Cars' songs at his live shows, was ecstatic and energetic as he inducted the band into the Rock Hall, even getting on his knee to hand the members their award as they walked onstage.

Heart's Ann Wilson will welcome The Moody Blues into the Rock Hall.

The ceremony will air as an edited special on HBO May 5, but you can also see their backstage press room chat below.
