Last night, John Legend took the stage as Jesus Christ in NBC's rock-musical Jesus Christ Superstar, a play that tells the story of Jesus' last week alive. It averaged a 6.0 overnight rating among Nielsen's metered market households, putting it in an advantageous position for total audience. It topped ABC American Idol head-to-head from 8-10 PM (6.1 vs. 4.5) and tied CBS' 60 Minutes as the top program of the night in households.

The broadcast featured a critically acclaimed cast including multiple-award-winner John Legend as Jesus Christ, rock legend Alice Cooper in the role of Herod and acclaimed songwriter Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene, Broadway World reported.
