Jammu lawyers 'prevent' officers to file chargesheet in minor girl rape case

The 8-year-old girl was kidnapped on January 10 after which she was supposedly sedated and raped. The chargesheet revealed shocking details of the deep planning that went into her gangrape and murder after she went missing on January 10. Sanji Ram was heading the agitation against state police's probe and had also been opposing the settlement of Gujjar and Bakerwal tribes in Kathua. Following protests from the Bakherwal community, the government handed over the investigation to the J&K police's crime branch. He is the custodian of the temple where the girl was allegedly held in captivity. "Sensing some trouble, the victim tried to flee but the juvenile stopped her by catching hold of her neck and covered her mouth with one of his hands and pushed her and she fell on the ground", the charge sheet says.

Since the victim was a Muslim and those arrested for the crime are Hindu, the case has taken a communal - and political - turn. The Bar association, with some of its members closely linked to the state BJP, has been batting for the accused and demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case. "Have you removed Lal Singh and Ganga from the Cabinet for supporting a rape a murder accused yet btw?" tweeted Junaid Azim Mattu, state spokesman of National Conference. The Crime Branch investigation is being monitored by the Jammu and Kashmir High Court and the probe agency has been submitting status reports to the court.

NC General Secretary and MLA Khanyar, Ali Muhammad Sagar who was flanked by NC provincial president, Nasir Aslam Wani while addressing media persons here said the party demand government to shift the minor girl's case from Kathua Court to any other court for the sake of free and favor trail.

"On January 11, the juvenile informed another accused Vishal Jangotra about the kidnapping of the girl telephonically and asked him to return from Meerut in case he wanted to satisfy his lust, " the chargesheet said.

Lawyers in Jammu today struck work in support of the accused. He called for a stern action against the lawyers who created ruckus in the court.

Pertinently, on Monday, a group of lawyers in Jammu had prevented Crime Branch (CB) of Jammu and Kashmir Police from filing charge sheet into rape-and-murder of eight-year-old girl Asifa Bano at Court of the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Kathua.

Mohd. Yousuf S/o Sahib Din (Victim's father) has lodged a complaint in P/S Hiranagar on 12 January to the effect that his daughter is missing while she was grazing horses in the nearby forest.

The accused include Sanjhi Ram, a retired government official, his son Vishal, special police officers Deepak Khajuria and Surender Verma, head constable Tilak Raj, sub-inspector Anand Dutta and civilian Parvesh Kumar.

Come with by the accused on the last yesterday, a team of Crime Branch faced stiff confrontation from the members of the Kathua Bar Association, who were saying the slogans "go back crime branch" during filing of the charge sheet and the going protests. In the chargesheet filed by the Crime Branch officials, it said that apart from six other accused, a Meerut man is also involved in this crime incident.

"It is extremely unfortunate that some lawyers speak in the name of Jammu Bar Association and their behavior is an attempt to appease hard core elements of the RSS and the BJP, but they have decidedly brought bad name to Jammu", former Union Minister told KNS.
