In Memoriam: Studio Ghibli's Isao Takahata

He is the co founder of the prestigious Japanese animator Studio Ghilbil. A first for the Ghibli franchise in style was Grave of the Fireflies character Seita staring down the camera in its opening moments. Takahata was reportedly suffering from lung cancer.

Takahata along with Hayao Miyazaki, another legendary anime artist, worked with Studio Ghibli to produce several hit anime feature films that had a massive impact not just in Japan, but also the rest of the world.

Born in Mie prefecture in central Japan, Takahata started his career in animation at the Toei studio in 1959, where he met long-term collaborator and rival Hayao Miyazaki.

Miyazaki also served as a producer on early Miyazaki works such as Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1984) and Castle in the Sky (1986).

In the interview, Takahata confessed to an nearly love-hate relationship with Miyazaki because their works were so different.

Beijing's list reflects its sensitivity to American complaints that it pressures foreign companies to hand over technology. On Wednesday, Facebook closed with a small decline, but other big tech names such as Apple and Microsoft closed higher.

After studying French literature at university, Takahata enjoyed a long relationship with France and was awarded the Order of Arts and Letters honour in recognition of his work in 2015.

"No animated movie has made me cry more than this tender, gorgeous, profound, soulful and landmark film", tweeted Annie Award-winning writer-director Jorge R. Gutierrez ("The Book of Life") on Friday. Over the next 25 years, Takahata would direct a further four films for Studio Ghibli: Only Yesterday (1991), Pom Poko (1994), My Neighbours the Yamadas (1999) and The Tale of Princess Kaguya (2013). Roger Ebert considered it "one of the greatest war films ever made" and included it on his "Great Movies" list.

He is also well-known for animation series "Alps no Shojo Heidi" ("Heidi, Girl of the Alps") and "Lupin Sansei" ("Lupin the Third").

His latest and most recent work The Tale of Princess Kaguya was critically acclaimed for its making and content.
