Here's how Facebook tracks you even when you're logged out

Or is it? During his testimony in front of a House committee on Wednesday, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that his company does track internet users who have not subscribed to Facebook.

"When you visit a site or app that uses our services [such as a Like or Share button, Facebook ads tools or Facebook Login], we receive information even if you're logged out or don't have a Facebook account".

Privacy campaigner Paul-Olivier Dehaye disagreed, noting that, as a non-Facebook user, he had been unable to access personal data collected through the company's off-site tracking systems. He says that companies like Twitter, Pinterest and LinkedIn also have Facebook-like Like and Share buttons to help user share things on website.

Amid a revamp following the breakout of the data breach scandal involving Cambridge Analytica and Facebook, the social media giant announced a facelift for its "Bookmarks" section to facilitate easy access and navigation of settings. In an official blog post, published on 16 April, Facebook throws light on the goal and nature of data it is collecting from third party websites and apps which are using their various engagement tools.

"Whether it's information from apps and websites, or information you share with other people on Facebook, we want to put you in control - and be transparent about what information Facebook has and how it is used".

Facebook Analytics provides developers information on how people are spending time on their websites and apps.

He adds that using this data doesn't just help internet users receive information they're interested in, it also helps Facebook to keep its site safe from potentially harmful users. An uplifting thought. Better still, lots of companies are doing similar things, such as Twitter, Google and Amazon.

When you visit a website, the browser you use sends a request to the site's server.

The way in which Facebook gets and tracks non-user data is primarily through online advertising.

The website also gets information about the browser and the operating system (Android or Windows for example) you are using.

Facebook is calling it the Data Abuse Bounty. In the aftermath of President Trump's election, many speculated whether Zuckerberg's carefully orchestrated road trip, which included photo-ops with farmers in Wisconsin, firemen in IN, and college football coach Nick Saban in Alabama, was part of grander political ambitions or a way to make amends after a tough year for Facebook's image.

Facebook has been embroiled in a massive data breach controversy ever since it surfaced that British data firm Cambridge Analytica improperly gathered information on its 87 million users.
