Donald Trump promises to protect states with legalized marijuana

State Attorney General Bob Ferguson said Friday he is "cautiously optimistic" after President Donald Trump reportedly promised to protect the legal marijuana industry in states, but noted that the president "has demonstrated a willingness to go back on his word".

President Donald Trump has reportedly lent his help to a US senator from Colorado, promising to once more legal guidelines that "protects states' rights" on legalized marijuana.

Gardner and the Department of Justice have been in discussions for months to get the holds lifted.

Cory Gardner says Trump made the pledge to him in a Wednesday night conversation.

"Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana".

Gardner, whose state legalized recreational marijuana in 2014, threatened to block all Justice Department nominees after Sessions' January memo.

"Because of these commitments, I have informed the Administration that I will be lifting my remaining holds on Department of Justice nominees", Gardner continued in the statement. Only a fool would bet any money on it.

He singled out Colorado, the first state to allow leisure marijuana product sales. Until then, it's just a promise, and accepting the promises of a pathological liar is never wise.

Trump told Gardner in a call late Wednesday that the cannabis industry in Colorado will not be targeted, the Senator announced Friday.

Gardner said he and his colleagues are working on a bill that would prevent the federal government from interfering in states' marijuana legalization.

"We applaud this commitment from President Trump, who promised during his campaign to take a federalist approach with regard to marijuana policy", Altieri said in a statement.

The January memo from Sessions stated that prosecutors should use their discretion in weighing whether charges were warranted, rather than abiding by the Obama-era guidance. The funding of Trump is viewed as vital.

Though pure speculation, Trump may be looking for a public-relations boost while embroiled in the ongoing investigation by US Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian involvement in the 2016 presidential campaign to Trump's benefit.

Some of Gardner's fellow GOP senators groused at the impact of the hold, and Gardner allowed some nominees to proceed in a "good-faith" gesture last month.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

There are now at least three bills under consideration which propose removing marijuana from the CSA's federal banned list or would allow states to legalize without fear of federal prosecution: the Marijuana Justice Act, the Respect State Marijuana Laws Act and the Ending Marijuana Prohibition Act. He has opposed decriminalizing the substance as an elected official.
