The progressive Working Families Party has endorsed "Sex and the City" actress Cynthia Nixon against incumbent Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

More than 91% of party's state committee members voted to support her at a meeting in Albany on Saturday. She is challenging current NY governor Andrew Cuomo - who is running for a third term - for the Democratic party nomination.

Since announcing her candidacy in March, Nixon has attacked Cuomo for his close ties to wealthy corporate donors and for allowing the state legislature to be controlled by Republicans and Democrats who caucus with them.

Labor unions allied with Cuomo said Friday they would withdraw from the Working Families Party.

The party describes itself as the state's progressive political party.

Nixon is slated to challenge Cuomo in the Democratic primary on September 13.

Nixon is mounting a progressive challenge against Cuomo. NY state does have a medical marijuana program, though it is extremely restrictive.

Cuomo campaign spokeswoman Abbey Fashouer on Saturday said Cuomo's "record of progressive accomplishment is unmatched".

"But in that divide the governor stands with the unions who have left the WFP and no longer feel it represents the interests of the middle- and working-class New Yorkers". Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is running in a Democratic primary against Nixon, dropped out of contention for the party's nomination Friday night, after delegates were leaning toward Nixon.

Cuomo has held a large lead against Nixon in recent polls. "We can build a movement that can win, but only if we all come together".
