Curved Apple iPhone Screens Could Arrive by 2021

The report said that the iPhone display Apple is now developing detects finger gestures even without physically touching the screen. While 3D Touch responds differently based on the pressure applied on the display, the new air gesture feature would work according to the proximity of a finger to the screen, a person with knowledge on the matter said.

Although the OLED panel of the iPhone X curves at the bottom, that's mostly hidden from owners of the device - the goal is exclusively to make the bottom bezel as small as possible, by having the necessary screen drivers "under" it.

Bloomberg notes that both the new features are still in early stage of research and development, and could take a few years time if Apple chooses to go forward with the enhancements. So, we can say that we cannot see this technology in near future.

Talking about touchless gestures, it will allow users to interact with their devices by getting their finger close to the screen but not touch it.

In Memoriam: Studio Ghibli's Isao Takahata
In the interview, Takahata confessed to an nearly love-hate relationship with Miyazaki because their works were so different. His latest and most recent work The Tale of Princess Kaguya was critically acclaimed for its making and content.

Citing "people familiar with the situation", Bloomberg described a gradual arch from top to bottom-different from the distinctly curved edges of competitor Samsung's Galaxy lineup, which use OLED technology. But unlike the Samsung, Apple's implementation of the curved screen will be different. In other words, it will allow users to navigate iOS just by waving with their hands above the phone. The iPhone X's OLED screen curves slightly at the bottom, but the shape is hard to detect.

Apple is also developing a curved screen. Ben Lovejoy speculated how curved screens could eventually lead to a foldable iPhone, which certainly seems more practical than this. In the meantime, Apple will evolve the technologies it delivered first in the iPhone X, and it will offer more display size and pricing options too.

Apple's patent for bendable batteries means you could squeeze a cell into more parts of an iPhone's body. Alphabet's Google is also working on touchless gestures.
