Blizzard warning area expands to take in Sioux City

Some roads are expected to drift shut.

A potent spring storm system that's expected to persist through the weekend raked across the Midwest Friday, spawning at least one tornado in Arkansas as blizzard conditions blanketed much of the Northern Plains.

Barron, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, Polk and Rusk counties in Wisconsin have been placed under a winter storm warning. The region could see snowfall from one to seven inches with hurricane force winds gusts up to 80 miles per hour. Damage to power lines may occur.

As North Platte and the surrounding area awaits predicted blizzard conditions, the weather is already starting to deteriorate.

Those high winds will combine with the intensifying snow starting around Akron for blizzard conditions that will make travel hard, if not impossible, for much of the day. At least 11 inches of snow had fallen in Valentine, and areas near Chadron and Sidney received almost 10 inches.
