Video shows officer at Florida shooting failed to act

News organizations including The New York Times had petitioned for the release of the surveillance footage, and Judge Jeffrey R. Levenson of Broward County Circuit Court ordered it be made public by noon Thursday.

The 19-year-old Cruz has been charged with 34 counts of murder and attempted murder.

On Wednesday Broward County Judge Elizabeth Scherer entered a not guilty plea on Cruz's behalf, after his lawyers indicated he would stand mute, or refuse to plead either innocent or guilty.

Surveillance video released Thursday showed the only armed sheriff's deputy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, remained outside during the February 14 massacre at the school, taking cover behind a wall. He also radioed the sheriff's office, issuing a warning about the incident. Coral Police officers entered the building when they arrived, and the deputies then joined them.

Nikolas Cruz is escorted into the courtroom for his brief hearing on Wednesday at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The video footage does not contain sound, but last week the sheriff's office released dispatch recordings that showed what Peterson said during the shooting.

After police reviewed the surveillance video, Peterson was placed on unpaid leave.

His attorney, Joseph DiRuzzo, could not be reached for comment Thursday.

Nearly all of the footage shows dark figures occasionally moving outside the school's Building 12, often while obscured by shadows. A few seconds later, he can be seen coming up behind an unidentified employee who had just knocked on a school door.

The clips only show the police response outside, not the horror that occurred within. "Do not approach the 12 or 1300 building, stay at least 500 feet away", a panicked Peterson shouted as people screamed in the background, according to radio recordings released last week.

The video does not show inside the buildings, the gunman or the faces of any students.

About 40 of the students staged a "die in", laying down on the sidewalk to protest gun violence in schools. It took officers 11 minutes to finally enter the building from the time the shooting was first reported.

The media organisations said the public had a right to see the videos under Florida's public record law.
