Mexico issued a statement late Wednesday, saying that Playa del Carmen remains safe.

Still, Americans were not told to avoid travel to Playa del Carmen.

The warning is effective immediately and states that U.S. Government employees are prohibited from traveling to Playa del Carmen until further notice.

"Continue to exercise a high degree of caution in Playa del Carmen", reads the statement. "Be very cautious on major highways and in rural areas".

The U.S. embassy did not specify the threat or say if it was related to the February 21 blast or the subsequent discovery of apparent explosives attached to another vessel.

Both incidents are still under investigation.

On Wednesday, Mexican officials said Playa del Carmen is safe despite the USA security alert.

The regional head of in Quintana Roo-the state Playa del Carmen is part of-played down the security risks, issuing a statement that stressed local officials do not know why the USA has barred staffers from coming and underlined that the area is still well attended by tourists.

Shortly afterward, the U.S. Embassy said its employees were banned from using all tourist ferries on that route until further notice.
