Uber Health takes you to, and from, your doctor's appointments

Uber is launching a new service that will help patients who need rides to and from their doctor's appointments.

Health care represents a major B2B opportunity for ride-hailing firms, given the number of patients who have transportation issues that prevent them from getting to their appointments. However, a recent announcement by Uber may be just what the driving service needed to convince customers to use their service over their competitors.

It seems both ride-sharing companies are pushing hard into the healthcare transportation space in order to add scale to their operations while helping providers improve their level of care.

Each year, more than 3.5 million Americans can't get the care they need because they're unable to secure transportation to or from the doctor's office, Baga said.

The healthcare provider partnering with Uber Health has an account; inputs a patient's name, pickup location, and drop off location; and requests an Uber on demand or up to 30 days in advance.

It goes without saying, the most important outcome is that all parties involved can get help and safety during this time. It followed reports Sunday that Smith fled the scene of an alleged domestic violence incident involving his fiancee.

When patients schedule appointments, Allscripts system would ask if they need transportation.

Access to care isn't the only way Lyft has partnered with healthcare organizations to make its ride-share service more inclusive.

Last week, Uber Health went live after an eight-month trial with 100 health care providers that tested the ride-hailing service as a way to ensure that eligible patients weren't no-shows for appointments.

The move follows the launch of Uber Health late last week, which is a service that lets doctors hail a ride for patients, even if they don't have a smartphone.

What we don't know yet, though, is whether or not Uber Health will be able to offer rides to those persons with disabilities - whether something like the Uber XXL now offered for larger groups, or any other specific types of vehicles, will be available to those using a wheelchair, etc. Of the organizations Uber Health has paired with so far, many have been utilizing their transportation budgets to pay for the ride-sharing. Uber is also introducing the option for riders to receive a call with trip details to their mobile phone or landline instead. The platform pushes a text alert to passengers about the scheduled ride, and the business provider typically covers the cost. "The stat is that missed appointments cost the healthcare system $150 billion per year", said Steingold. Reiss said Uber has not yet responded to the lawsuit.
