Snow and ice cause weather warnings and closures for Andover

The arrival of the cold weather has brought a repeat of the disruption caused by the "beast from the east" storm that hit Britain two weeks ago.

The amber warning was updated after midday on Sunday to remove southeast Wales and parts of the West Country, where the snow eased during the day.

A number of yellow weather warnings are also in place for snow and ice - with the largest area covered being the majority of England including the southeast from early this morning and until midnight tonight.

A yellow warning of ice and snow remains in place across the region for the rest of today and into tomorrow morning.

Traffic Wales said long delays were likely on the Severn Bridge as one lane has been closed in both directions because of high winds.

Parts of the South West could see as much as 25cm of snow on higher ground overnight.

It comes after snow and ice caused disruption to road, rail and air travel and forced several sporting events to be abandoned.

The lowest temperature on Saturday morning was recorded near Carter Bar on the Scotland-England border, at -2.6C.

Richard Leonard, head of road safety at Highways England, said: "Gritters will be out treating our roads around the clock, but it is still important to drive to the conditions when snow is forecast".

Heathrow Airport said "extreme wintry weather" is expected throughout the day, adding: "In preparation, we've worked with our airlines to consolidate Sunday's flight schedule, moving passengers on to fewer flights".

Many councils, including Rhondda Cynon Taf, Cardiff, Vale of Glamorgan and Newport councils have gritted main roads overnight and said they would continue to try to clear roads throughout Sunday, but have warned people to take care on side roads.

More than 100 flights to or from Heathrow were cancelled on Saturday ahead of the predicted bad weather. Some heavy snowfall is expected in eastern areas in particular.

In the north of England, strong winds led to the cancellation of the annual Boat Race of the North, which sees rowing teams from Durham and Newcastle universities compete against each other on the River Tyne, the BBC reported.
