Shiffrin retains Alpine World Cup title

Shiffrin finished third in the giant slalom in Ofterschwang, Germany, taking the champion's crystal globe after her closest competitor in the overall standings, Switzerland's Wendy Holdener, failed to win the event or finish second.

America's Shiffrin, fresh from winning two Olympic titles in PyeongChang, now leads the overall World Cup by 623 points from Holdener, while it's Petra Vlhova leading the chase in the slalom standings.

Holdener has never won a World Cup slalom but does have 16 podium finishes, including 12 in races won by Shiffrin.

It was the American's fifth slalom title in the past six seasons after only failing to win the discipline in 2016 when she missed five races due to a knee injury.

Her overall success overshadowed Mowinckel's win, her first on the World Cup circuit after silvers in the downhill and giant in Pyeongchang.

Mikaela Shiffrin (Eagle-Vail, Colo.) won her fifth World Cup slalom title following her 42nd FIS Ski World Cup victory Saturday in Ofterschwang, Germany. "To have the overall locked in now before going to Are (Sweden) is pretty cool".

Shiffrin was planning to take a few days off before flying to Are and compete in the last GS and slalom races of the season, with nothing more at stake than just the race win. Given her dominance in slalom throughout her career, Shiffrin was expected to defend her 2014 Olympic gold medal in the event but finished fourth.

Her 11th win of the season ties her mark from a year ago and is the third most ever on the women's circuit behind Vail's Lindsey Vonn, who won 12 races during the 2011-12 season and retired great Vreni Schneider of Switzerland who won a record 14 races during the 1988-89 season.

"For me the important thing is the balance between risk and being smart". Gallhuber's compatriot Bernadette Schild finished third, 0.39 seconds behind the leader.
