It was another snag in the return for the world number 13 Djokovic who admitted he lacked composure while playing in just his second event of 2018 and first since having surgery.

Japan's Daniel won the first set on a tie-break before Djokovic, making his return from an elbow injury, took the second.

"When you go from night to day [in consecutive days, you're usually] playing a different opponent", said Federer, who couldn't remember the last time he had played a match that was interrupted overnight.

"Very weird. I mean, I just completely lost rhythm, everything".

"But yeah, it was just - I was grateful to be out on the court after surgery that quickly".

"I just struggled also a little bit with the health the last couple of weeks".

After handing back an early break to allow Krajinovic to draw level at two-all, Federer moved into cruise control.

Rain - a rarity in the desert - delayed the start of the match, with Federer cautious but restless to get play underway in front of a capacity crowd.
