Georgia Hires Tom Crean As Its New Basketball Coach

The university fired Mark Fox, who was at the helm for nine seasons, last Saturday.

"Tom Crean is one of the most successful coaches in college basketball over the past two decades". Before that, he coached Marquette for nine seasons and advanced to the Final Four in 2003.

Crean will take over a Georgia program that went 18-15 this season. His teams have consistently been participants in postseason play, and his players have been extremely successful in the classroom.

"I've never lost the drive to coach, but I haven't (been) consumed with the fact I'm not coaching", Crean said, per Shannon Ryan of the Chicago Tribune. "He's going to be a great fit for the University of Georgia", athletics director Greg McGarity said in a statement released by the school.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old is now injured, and continues to undergo his recovery back in Brazil. But it is believed that he is ready to return to Spain and join the Catalan giants' rivals Real.

It will be interesting to see how Crean fares in the SEC. Crean inherited a program in the midst of a massive embarrassment of scandal brought on by Kelvin Sampson. The Hoosiers fired him after missing the NCAA Tournament following a No. 11 in the AP Top 25 poll for the 2016-17 season.

Sources told CBS Sports that a search firm working on behalf of Georgia initially inquired about Xavier's Chris Mack and Texas' Shaka Smart, both of whom respectfully declined. His time as a head coach dates back to 1999 when he got the job at Marquette.

Camped out in Bloomington over the last year due to his high school aged kids, Crean has been a college basketball analyst for ESPN and ESPN Radio over the last year. In 10 seasons from 1989-99, Crean was a member of the staffs at Michigan State, Western Kentucky and Pittsburgh.

Crean won the Big Ten in 2013 and 2016.
