Fired VA Chief Shulkin: 'They Saw Me as an Obstacle to Privatization'

He later served as a physician to former president Barack Obama, before the Trump administration. That frustration reached the White House recently, with Trump reportedly floating the idea in private of replacing Shulkin with Energy Secretary Rick Perry.

Shulkin didn't name the President in his appeal, but seemed to take direct aim at the man in the Oval Office, blaming the "toxic" and "chaotic" environment of Washington for hampering him at the VA.

In an op-ed published late Wednesday night, outgoing Veteran's Affairs Secretary David Shulkin ripped into the "toxic" politicized nature of Washington, D.C., saying the atmosphere in the nation's capitol makes it near impossible to get anything done, and that he was forced out because he opposed privatization of veterans' services. "Dr. Shulkin has made a tremendous impact toward improving the lives of veterans during his time at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs", said Isakson, while adding "He has been instrumental in all that we have accomplished in the previous year, and I thank Dr. Shulkin for his dedicated service to our country and our veterans". He improperly accepted tickets to a Wimbledon tennis match and spent much of the trip on sightseeing activities, the IG found.

His profile rose after he conducted a sweeping press conference about the president's medical exam in January in which he impressed Trump with his camera-ready demeanor and deft navigation of reporters' questions as he delivered a rosy depiction of the president's health, according to a person familiar with the president's thinking but not authorized to discuss private conversations. He also said he was removed from his position by people who wanted to privatize the VA and said it was "a awful idea". Shulkin agreed to reimburse the government more than $4,000 in that case.

Who is Rear Admiral Ronny Jackson, Trump's New Pick for VA Secretary?

An internal investigation of the Department of Veterans, initiated after a journalistic revelation, concluded that the secretary committed "serious negligence" during a trip he made in 2017 to the United Kingdom and Denmark. I have been falsely accused of things by people who wanted me out of the way. In 2005, he joined the 2nd Marines, Combat Logistics Regiment 25, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the emergency medicine physician in charge of resuscitative medicine for a Surgical Shock Trauma Platoon, according to the White House.

As many of you know, I am a physician, not a politician. The agency at the time was reeling from public outrage over mismanagement and allegations that veterans were dying while waiting for care. He oversaw creation of a 24-hour hotline for veteran complaints and improved transparency, posting wait times for medical appointments at each facility and other quality-control measures consistent with many private sector hospitals.

Mr Trump had been considering replacements for Mr Shulkin for weeks but had not been known to be considering Dr Jackson for the role. "The administration needs to be ready to prove that he's qualified to run such a massive agency, a $200 billion bureaucracy". Besides its vast health care system, the agency operates 135 national veterans cemeteries and is responsible for distributing monetary benefits to millions of veterans each month.
