Australia-UK: First non-stop flight arrives in London from Perth

The group's chief executive Alan Joyce said it was "a truly historic flight that opens up a new era of travel".

Travel firm Flight Centre has recorded "high demand" for the new Qantas flights.

The 17-hour flight from Perth on the west coast of Australia made history as the first air link between the two continents which did not stop over in the Middle East or Asia.

The flight will be the world's second-longest after Qatar Airways' route from Doha to Auckland, which spans 14,529km, according to the International Air Transport Association.

The first direct flight between Australia and Britain has touched down in London, in what has been described as a "historic day for aviation".

She said: 'To have the opportunity to get on a plane at Heathrow and step out in Perth is just phenomenally exciting and I'm sure we are going to see lots and lots of people taking advantage of that'.

Australia hopes the direct routes will boost tourism.

He also asked to be allowed to return to Russian Federation because he wanted to see his mother, brother and other relatives. Russian Federation responded by expelling its own diplomats and shutting down the British Council cultural organisation.

This is 24% further than the UK's existing longest route of 7,275 miles, operated by Garuda Indonesia between Heathrow and Jakarta.

Auckland is also the origin of Emirates Airline Flight 449, with Airbus A380 superjumbos travelling almost 14,200km to Dubai.

This new link is part of Qantas' ambitious plans, unveiled over the past two years, to add ultra long-haul flights to its global schedules, The Telegraph reported.

The former champion, Singapore Airlines' 15,300km Singapore-New York route, was discontinued in 2013.

The flight, carrying more than 200 passengers and 16 crew, departed from Perth at 6:49pm local time on Saturday.

United Airlines launched its service connecting Los Angeles airport to Singapore using 787s past year, saying the 14,100km link would be the longest non-stop flight from the United States to anywhere in the world in terms of distance.

In 2017, United Airlines launched a route from Los Angeles to Singapore, offering the longest-distance non-stop flight available from the US.
