The ANC said on Tuesday it had chose to "recall" Zuma, a euphemism for removing him from office, but gave him no firm deadline to resign, setting the stage for a potential fight to wrest him from power.

"Recalling" the head of state is a party-level instruction that the 75-year-old Zuma is under no constitutional obligation to obey.

If Zuma resigns, the cabinet would stay, Mashatile said, but should he be removed via a no confidence vote, the entire cabinet would have to be removed, the ANC treasurer general added.

He would make a statement later Wednesday.

Secretary general Ace Magashule and his deputy, Jessie Duarte, delivered the party's recall letter to Zuma at his official residence in Pretoria.

Mr Zuma's grip on power began to erode when Cyril Ramaphosa narrowly won the ANC's elective conference in December and was chosen to become the party's new president.

The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance, said Tuesday that it had been informed by the chief prosecutor that his team will provide its recommendation on February 23 about whether to prosecute Zuma on the old charges.

A lawyer for the Gupta family said he could not comment on the raid because he had yet to see the search warrant.

BUSINESS Leadership South Africa (BLSA) has welcomed as "courageous" the decision by the African National Congress (ANC) to recall President Jacob Zuma.

If Zuma resists, he will face a vote of no confidence in parliament.

The raid happened as the ruling African National Congress Party awaited a response from Zuma after instructing him on Tuesday to quit office because of a series of scandals. Some ANC leaders have said they expect Zuma to step down on Wednesday.

The president has faced multiple corruption allegations, although he says he has done nothing wrong.

It comes after an early morning raid by the elite Hawks police unit at the home of a business family linked to President Zuma.

"State capture" is a term used in South Africa to describe the alleged looting of state enterprises by associates of Zuma, who denies any wrongdoing.

Zuma has been discredited by corruption scandals tied to an arms deal two decades ago.

South Africa's chief prosecutor is expected to make a decision on whether to prosecute Zuma on the old charges, which were reinstated past year after being thrown out in 2009.

Many other graft allegations against him have centred on the three Gupta brothers, who are accused of unfairly obtaining lucrative government contracts and even being able to choose Zuma's ministerial appointments.

In 2016, South Africa's highest court ruled that Mr Zuma had violated the constitution when he failed to repay government money spent on his private home.
