Top judges arrested as Maldives crisis deepens

The Maldives opposition leader and two Supreme Court judges have been arrested hours after the government declared a state of emergency.

The emergency declaration came after standoff between President and Supreme court where the former refused to comply by the court order to release opposition leaders.

Shukoor read out the declaration on state television shortly after Yameen sent three letters to the judges asking them to reverse their decision.

Maldivian President Abdulla Yameen called a state of emergency on Monday and ordered soldiers to arrest his 80-year-old predecessor, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, his estranged half brother, who supported the main political opposition. "But when the chief justice were pushing for these things beyond his mandate or jurisdiction, we had to take it seriously".

"The government does not believe that the Supreme Court ruling to release the political prisoners can be enforced", she added.

Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who has allied himself with the opposition, was also detained at his home.

Nasheed has called for Yameen to be removed from power.

Nasheed, who is now in Sri Lanka, also urged the United States to block financial transactions of the government led by President Abdulla Yameen.

(MENAFN - NewsIn.Asia) Male, February 5 (newsin.asia) The Maldivian government has suspended most rights which will adversely affect its security and stability under the 15-day State of Emergency declared on Monday.

"The world's eyes are on the Maldives right now and human rights must not become a casualty of this ongoing crisis", the watchdog's director Biraj Patnaik said in a statement.

"I had to declare a national emergency because there was no other way to investigate these judges", Yameen said.

The decree is "unconstitutional and illegal", he said in a statement. "This is something more risky", President Yameen Abdul Gayoom said on national television.

The Government of Maldives wishes to assure the Maldivian people and the global community that the safety of all Maldivians and foreigners living in and visiting the Maldives will be ensured, the announcement said.

China, the United States and India have all issued travel advisories for the Maldives. The Maldives has been mired in political unrest since Nasheed was ousted in 2012 and, in a controversial ruling, later sentenced to 13 years in prison on terrorism charges.

Without directly commenting on the United Nations, the U.S. and India's criticism of the handling of situation by Yameen, Geng said China believes that the Maldives government, political parties and people have the wisdom and the capability to deal with their current situation on their own.
