PM Modi to launch Amma Two-wheeler Scheme in Chennai today

Modi announced policies for working women which includes an extension of maternity leave from 12 to 26 weeks and registry of the house in woman's name under the PM Awaas Yojana.

Modi symbolically handed over the keys and registration certificates of two wheelers to five women on the occasion, reports PTI. "These initiatives will go a long way in the empowerment of women & protection of nature".

"When we empower women in family, we empower the entire household". By extending education to women, you are educating the entire household. Out of 31 crore Jan Dhan Bank Accounts, 16 crore are of women, Modi said, adding that the percentage of total bank accounts held by women has gone up from 28 percent in 2014 to 40 percent now. The scheme, which aims at providing 50 percent subsidy to all the working women to buy two-wheelers, was a pet project of Jayalalithaa.

The prime minister also took a dig at the Congress.

Speaking on the occasion, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said, "Tamil Nadu government continues to be inspired by the principles of Amma".

He also planted a tree sapling and inaugurated the plan to plant 70 lakh tree saplings as a part of Jayalalithaa birth anniversary celebrations in the state. "After the NDA came to power, Tamil Nadu received Rs 1.8 lakh crore under the 14th Finance Commission", he said, taking a dig at the UPA government.

The Prime Minister further said that with the change in Factory's Act, women are now allowed to work in night shifts as well. One post said the statue looked like the legendary actor K. B. Sundarambal, another said it resembled a former minister, yet another said it surely was modeled after a party senior's wife while many others were convinced it had close resemblance to a prominent freedom fighter from the south.

Later in the evening, the Prime Minister will be in Surat for the flagging off of the "Run for New India Marathon". Over 3 lakh women have already applied for the subsidy, and the Tamil Nadu government has said it is in the process of scrutinising the applications and shortlisting the recipients.

From there, he flew to INS Adyar Naval base near Marina beach, from where he reached the function venue by road.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Chennai at 5:30 PM for his two-day visit to Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.

Last month, the state government increased the subsidy component under the scheme from Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000.
